We are now hiring for the Executive Director position at the Beverly Heritage Center! The Executive Director will be responsible for overseeing operations for the Museum and partner organizations. The ideal candidate will have a degree in history, public administration, tourism or related field with at least two years of practical public history experience. Extensive relevant experience may substitute. Compensation and start date to be negotiated with successful candidate. Applications may be accepted until position is filled. African-American History Walking Tour
Join us at the Heritage Center for a walking tour that covers the historically underrrepresented African American stories of Beverly and greater Randolph County. Adam Ockers, who designed our African-American History of Randolph County exhibit, will take visitors to a series of sites in Beverly significant to this history in our area. The tour will begin at the Heritage Center, meeting at 12:00 PM, and will last about an hour, comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing are encouraged as a majority of this tour will be outdoors.
Mother’s Day Soiree
Join us at the Heritage Center for our yearly Soiree fundraiser event. This year we have themed it to the story of Mother’s Day, a celebration originating in West Virginia with the efforts of Anna Jarvis. Starting at 6 PM will be a social hour with Live Music from Trio Acoustica including John Vaughan, Katy McClane, and Rick Evans. At 7 PM, dinner will be served including a Grilled Beef Tenderloin and home-cooked sides. West Virginia in World War 1
To celebrate the centennial of WWI, in 2018 we inaugurated an exhibit featuring the story of Corporal Vincent Parmesano Jr., an Elkins resident who fought on the front lines in France. Parmesano was the son of Italian immigrants who attended Davis and Elkins College and who was part of the “Blue Ridge Division”. Learn about him and other West Virginians in the First World War.
A New Route Along the Underground Railroad?
The history of the Underground Railroad in West Virginia is still something of a mystery even after all these years. A series of safe points from the Deep South leading into Canada, spirituals such as “Follow the Gourd” were integral to guiding enslaved men, women, and children to a life of freedom up north. While certain routes along the Underground Railroad are well-known in the Northern and Eastern Panhandles and along the Ohio River, the heart of the Mountain State has not been examined in great detail.
